This book is an amazing example of how love can cause people to lose their minds. It's not any old love story — it's a love story, the story of two lovers who were so in love with each other that one died and neither could live without the other. Laila and Majnun grew up together and fell madly in love with one another, but after Laila was given away as a child bride to another man they were forbidden to be together. Majnun escaped his family's home for Laila, scaling mountains and fighting beasts along the way. He finally found her, and began to court her. Laila and Majnun fell in love with one another and had a baby together. However, Majnun was dragged back to his family and Laila was forced to live without him. The grief of separation drove Laila mad, and she began living in the mountains like an animal. Later, Majnun found out where she was living, but by this time she had lost her mind and no longer recognized him. All she would talk about was Qays ibn al-Mulawwah, her husband that everyone had forgotten about. Majnun spent his time here endlessly begging her to come home with him, and continuously writing poetry for Laila where he professed his love for her. Over time, she regained her senses and accepted Majnun as her husband, but by the time they made it back to his family's home she was so ill that she died within a day or two after their reunion. The rest of the book is about how Majnun is torn between whether to turn her into a lifeless body of clay or to take her back with him to his family's home. "Laila and Majnun" demonstrates an important point about love, that love can cause people to lose their minds. lailajmajnun.blogspot.com/2009/07/blog-post_2188.html?m=1Egyptian Poetry (http://egyptianpoetry.blogspot.com/2012/05/hosni-moustafa-laila-and-majnun_2220. html)Moustafa, Hosny.
